We had a great experience with Gentry Towing when our transmission went out and we needed to get our vehicle home. It was dark and getting late, and Gentry responded quickly - arrived within 20 minutes. We appreciated the prompt, friendly, professional service!

They seem to be knowingly breaking the law. Odd Franklin PD works with them. Then again Franklin PD doesn’t have the best reputation for corruption as far as I am aware. Make sure you know the law.

Tennessee Code § 55-31-402 (2024) clarifies several important things about your rights when your vehicle is towed.

It reads:

“A person engaged in the business of towing motor vehicles… shall not charge a storage fee for any day on which the vehicle is not available for release to the owner, lienholder, or insurer, unless the failure to release is based on a hold placed on the vehicle by law enforcement.”

They tried to charge us for days the lot was closed, which is illegal.

The law also states that the maximum release fee is $100 (they charged us $50, so that’s fine).

When you go there, it’s pretty shady feeling. You get a yellow cash receipt with a random dollar amount, not itemized charges. All cash. Not in the computer system. When I asked him to itemize the charges, he got annoyed and made up some number (which came to a different amount than he had originally told us). He told us $460, the itemized bill showed $425.

They insisted we pay in cash (I’m guessing so they don’t have to report it to the IRS). Make sure you insist on paying in card so you can prove the transaction. If they add some ridiculous extra charge for paying in card, that too may be illegal. If they force you to pay in cash or anything at all feels off, feel free to call Franklin PD and ask for Officer John Baker.

Once I told Mr. Gentry (owner) the law, he said I was wrong, that the law didn’t say that. So I showed him the law and told him I would be reporting him for fraud and he basically let me name my own price after that which was half the original bill. We were told $450 (for a 5 day impound). That’s $150 towing fee + $40 a day lot storage + $50 release fee. We ended up paying $265 because the lot was closed during most of those days.

They will cheat every part of the process possible, always in their own favor. For example, the towing fee automatically includes the first 24 hours of lot storage free, as per state statute. But they will try to count that as the first day.

The owner said “all of the towing company’s do the same thing”. So make sure you know the law wherever you go. Also be willing for them to intimidate you and pressure you. Mr. Gentry got in my face and I had to ask him “are you going to hit me?”

I recorded the conversation. You can do this legally in TN under “one party consent” laws assuming you are speaking in the conversation as well.

Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-13-602(a)(1)

(Interception of communications — Exceptions)

“It is lawful for a person to intercept a wire, oral, or electronic communication where such person is a party to the communication or where one (1) of the parties to the communication has given prior consent to such interception.”

Alright. Be careful. Make sure you know your rights. God bless you.

- Pastor Michael

I hit a deer at about 1:30am while transporting some New Year’s Eve patrons on New Year’s morning. The accident occurred on Hillsboro Road between Moran and West Sneed.

I was injured and taken by ambulance from the scene of the accident and transported to Williamson Medical Center.

I didn’t have comprehensive coverage on my vehicle to cover my damages, and even though I had passengers at the time Uber’s insurance refused to cover.

My 2015 Honda Pilot Touring was towed by Gentry towing. Gentry was kind and professional in the beginning by allowing me to remove my personal belongings from my vehicle several days later.

I planned to get my vehicle back the following week but we were struck by a winter weather system and I had to undergo emergency retina reattachment surgery.

I called Gentry towing on January 17th, January 19th, and January 24th and couldn’t reach anyone. I finally reached Mr. Gentry on January 28th to let him know that my insurance wouldn’t cover and that I wanted to get an invoice for the bill.

Gentry then proceeded to tell me that “the deer got in to my vehicle pretty good” and that “it wasn’t worth fixing.” He said “l’m willing to keep my vehicle and call it even on the tow and storage bill.”

I then informed Mr. Gentry that a friend of mine who does body work saw the video and pictures of my vehicle’s damage and said that he could repair it for around $3000.

I asked about the bill again. Gentry then informed me that the 10 mile tow to his lot was $375, and the storage was being billed at $40 a day. At that point I asked Gentry to tow my vehicle back to my house in Murfreesboro, TN (29.6 miles) He charged $300 more for that tow. He said he would give me a “break” on my bill at $1700.00 cash total…lucky me!

IMO Gentry wasn’t answering my phone calls intentionally so that he could allow the storage bill to snowball on my vehicle so that could place a lien on it.
He wanted my vehicle, so he overcharged me and avoided me to try to keep it.

Needless to say I think he’s crooked and I don’t recommend Gentry Towing…at all!
