Had car trouble in downtown Raleigh and Ace towing was there in 15 minutes to take me to the dealership. Nice driver, clean passenger area, and seemed like a fair price to me. Would recommend if needed for a tow.

My car was towed by my apartment complex. I called around midnight to ask how much it would be to pick it up. I was told 290 cash over the phone. I decided to wait til the morning to pick it up at 8am (thankfully the office was opening at 8). At the office, I was told it would be 240 cash. Either there’s a price difference in picking up your car during evening vs morning or the guy who answered my call the first time was trying to pocket the difference. Let’s say there is a price difference in picking up at different hours, seems shady not to be transparent about it and disclose the options.

I woke up one day to find my car had been towed from my apartment complex? Why, you might ask. Was I parked in a fire lane? No. Was I in a handicap space? No. My tags were "expired," except my registration had been renewed in April 2025. The sticker was just not on the car. According to ACE, the apartment complex authorized this tow. And to be sure, I am already speaking with an attorney about it. They can expect a small claims court date. There were other cars in the complex with expired tags, and the lease says they provide a 24 hour notice on the car if it will be towed due to being "unregistered." My problem with ACE is that even if I could prove my car was registered, I would still have pay the towing fee. I asked day of how much it would cost. About $250. I didnt have that amount of expendable money since I am in college to be a teacher and I work 2 jobs. I planned to pick it up the day I got paid. The person from ACE who I called failed to mention the daily rate. So, I now owe $375 after waiting a few days to be able to afford it. It is absolutely baffling how it is legal to steal someone's property like this. These people are not the police; they should not be attempting to do police work. If the police had been the ones to monitor my car's registration, they would see that it is registered and give me a warning about the missing tag. This towing company, and my apartment complex, most certainly engages in "predatory towing." Good luck to all whose car is wrongfully towed. Definitely investigate your legal rights. And publicize the wrongdoing- WRAL has a segment called 5 on your side.
