It’s a long walk to the river from the Illinois side. When you start from Illinois side, the bridge is just going over “bottom land” next to the river. I’d say it over 1/4 mile to get over the water. It’s interesting to see the pump stations in the river. There is one sign at the entrance but not much else in Route 66 from this side. Note that the walk is literally uphill both ways, as there is a crest in the middle of the bridge. Note: the parking lot is very isolated. The day we were there several people, including families with children were walking on the bridge late in the afternoon. But I can see that it might be dangerous to be in that parking lot as it gets dark.

The bridge itself is interesting to explore, especially if you enjoy unusual views of the Mississippi River and historic engineering. The area feels peaceful and open, great for a casual walk, bike ride, or photos. One downside is that amenities like restrooms or shade are limited, so plan accordingly. Tip: Bring water and comfortable shoes if you’re walking across the bridge—it’s long and exposed to the sun.

This is a great walk whether going as a couple or a family or friends. The bridge goes out over the Mississippi and provides great views down river to St Louis. I recommend parking on the Illinois side of the river and walking out through the nature area on the bridge. The round trip walk is just over 2 miles and has a very gentle grade.
