This weekend my wife and I had taken our pickup and travel trailer to go camping at the Agua Piedra campground in the Carson National Forest. We pulled into A-1 Auto & Towing to fill up on gas. After filling up, I got back in the truck, started the engine and went to put it into gear only to have the shifter go all the way to the bottom...never engaging any of the slots (P-R-N-D-M). What a SINKING FEELING!!! I saw some guys at the shop door and walked over and asked if the mechanic was available. Two of the guys immediately grabbed a jack, stand and mat and came over to take a look and within a minute found the problem. The bushing in the shifter arm on the side of the transmission had come apart and needed to be replaced. He did not have the part, but was able to patch it together with zip ties and baling wire and got it working enough to get us back on the road and showed me how to repair it if it came apart again. When I asked him what I owed him, he said $40. I was so appreciative of the way we were treated that I gladly paid it and would have happily paid more. We were in a very vulnerable position and could have easily been the target of someone unscrupulous. It is so nice to find people who honestly care about their fellow human beings. On a side note, my wife and I had planned to make eggs for breakfast the next morning and had left the house without them. My wife noticed a sign on their door that said they had fresh farm eggs ($4/dozen). We made it to the campground safely, got set up and had fresh farm eggs the next morning. We had a wonderful camping trip and made it home safely. Our pickup is now at our regular shop to have the permanent repair done. I have not actually visited the shop but the owner has been working on my sons car for awhile and so far I have had nothing but positive communication with him and his staff.
