I met Ken Baum through Marketplace and bought a CAT 262D machine from them. This was the first piece of heavy equipment that I've bought, so that coupled with the fact that I met them through the internet made me nervous. I've read some horror stories about purchasing used skidsteers, so in our presale discussions, one of the things that I asked Ken was - what will happen if something awful like that happens to me. His answer - he'd take care of me.

Well, something awful did happen - within the first couple hours of operation, the machine's flywheel/flex plate slipped and the machine lost all power. While it was in the woods. It was basically inoperable and immovable. The engine and pump and everything else were just fine, but the engine could not transfer power to the pump.

Ken and Heavy Equipment made it right. They sent a massive forklift on an articulating loader, picked the machine up, replaced the flywheel, and had it ready to work within a few days. Had I bought this machine from a farmer or private party that didn't have these capabilities, I would have been completely out of luck. Thanks to these guys for standing behind their word.

I’m leaving my first review ever BTW because I thought this story needed told. I purchased an excavator from this outfit and the story I got was it was ran thru their shop and was in good working order. They had replaced some lines on the swing motor and sorted some ignition problems. Based on the good feedback and pics of the machine I decided to spend 32k dollars of my hard earned money site unseen (mistake). 2400 bucks in shipping later it showed up. After 20 seconds on the machine it was evident something was terribly wrong. The first side to side swing of the cab had a serious clunk. I noticed the swing transmission was moving independent of the house with 4 foot of back and forth slip. Ok no biggie the the bolts are loose. When I went to tighten the bolts I learned all the holes were literally 3/16 ovaled out from being loose for apparently a real long time. The closest bolt that would clean up the hole wouldn’t fit thru the transmission. After pulling the swing drive I found a broken pinion and shattered lower bearing in transmission. The broken bearing outer race managed to destroy the lower main gearbox by wearing into it over 1/2 inch deep. Add it all up and your at 22k worth of repair parts. Sad story for me really. I know machines go thru these places non stop and it’s hard to know everything about every machine but I’m not an expert but within 10 seconds of operation I knew there was something catastrophic going on and professionals that ran it thru the shop had no idea. I find it real hard to believe when they changed lines less than a foot away and there were bolts laying there that had worked all the way out and the giant clunk and all the slop in the house none of which was disclosed. Big loss for me so I thought id tell my story. My advice if your gonna buy something from these guys you better go and inspect it don’t trust them to tell you anything. Obviously this was an auction machine and someone knew it was a basket case. They made their money and now I own it. BEWARE!!!

PS: The pictures I posted of the damage including me running in long enough to drive it up to my garage after delivery. Thanks front loaders and parts, you’ll never see another penny of my money. Guaranteed.
