Approximately 18 years ago, I was involved in a minor accident while driving through McVeytown for the first time. My young son was in the backseat, and I rear-ended another vehicle. Understandably shaken, I was trying to manage the situation when a tow truck, operated by Rich Houtz, arrived on the scene. While I was on the phone with my husband, trying to determine whether my insurance or AAA coverage would apply, Mr. Houtz assured me that he accepted insurance and that everything would be fine. He also said the vehicle could remain at his lot as long as needed. Based on his words, we believed there would be no significant issue with leaving the vehicle there temporarily. However, when we returned three days later to retrieve the car, we were presented with a surprisingly high bill—one that included storage fees we had not been informed about. At the time, I was unaware that daily storage fees were standard practice. Although I understand this now, the lack of clear communication at the time made the situation feel deeply unfair, especially during a moment of distress. Fast forward to today—18 years later—and my son, had his vehicle towed by the same operator. Despite the vehicle being on the lot for less than 24 hours, he was charged for two days of storage because it spanned two calendar dates. This approach, while technically permissible, feels like a continuation of the same lack of transparency that I experienced years ago. In both situations, it felt as though we were taken advantage of during vulnerable moments. I’m sharing this experience so you know before Rich Houtz touches your vehicle.
