I visited the grounds on an early Sunday morning and came away quite enchanted. It was huge! It was well staffed! It was beautiful. All around well done and one of my favorite of the old surviving Virginia plantations. You park and go thru a very small museum to pay your dues. Then across a neat bridge over a ginormous gully to the gift shop and a beautiful walk to the house. The house tour (self audio) was quite cool. The grounds were just awesome. Lots of outbuildings well maintained. It was like a mini Colonial Williamsburg in all the depth and information. I could have spent a day there. Later, I decided to drive the other side and stumbled upon a whole new unexpected world. Lots of cabins that could be rented, a restaurant that seemed closed for the winter and then a windy drive to the river where people were searching and finding fossil shark teeth. One showed me his treasures. They weren't gigantic, but you could definitely tell they were shark teeth. Finally before leaving the river front was a old gristmill which alone would have been worth the trip. Anyone near the area should add it to their list and if you have guests around, make it an activity on your "visitor's list".

We had a very enjoyable time here. We are traveling to the VA250 locations and found Robert E Lee's birthplace. I have lived in Virginia for a while now and didn't realize it was so close! The entrance has a museum of different items of the people that lives there. Including a wedding ring that was lost at the beach and later found! There is a very informative little booklet with each of items in the cases to point out neat facts and information. There is even an old Casio watch in a case and I found that kind of hilarious with all of the ve y old artifacts they have a watch from the 80s. ? The grounds are very well maintained, even in winter. As you walk around you will see fallen black walnuts and other thingsnyou don't normally get to see. Peer into the burial chamber, that was interesting too. Looks like a hole that people are just dropped into, but we found out there is stairs to below. The big house is just that, big! The rooms are laid out how they were thought to be originally. They have a walking tour that you can use your phone for. Adds some depth to just a normal tour. Highly recommend! Very neat and very informative place!

Great place to visit to learn more about the history of the US. You do a self guided tour using your phone and there are docents to answer questions. Very nice gift shop. Rustic cabins are available to stay in on the property. There is also an area where one can hunt for fossils by the water. Westmoreland state park is next door.
