US Foods – Garland, TX I arrived at the facility and stopped at the guard shack, parked, and walked up to check in. There were two men inside the guard shack, and one motioned for me to step inside. The guard shack itself is very tight. They reviewed my paperwork and then instructed me to return to my truck, make a left turn (which appears to be required for semis), then turn right and park in the staging area along the fence. Drivers must park in this staging area and then walk to Door 26 to check in. When I arrived around 9:45 AM for my 11:00 AM appointment, staging space was very limited—only one or two spots were available—and there was already a lineup of trucks waiting. I’m still gaining confidence with backing, and while I was struggling to back into a staging spot, a yard dog noticed and got out of his hostler along with another driver to help spot me. I really appreciated their help, as it made a stressful situation much easier. After parking, I walked up the ramp to Door 26 to check in. Be sure to have your pickup number, seal number, and cell phone number ready, as you’re required to fill out a form during check-in. After checking in, you’re sent back to your truck to wait for a dock assignment. The staff member at the window was very matter-of-fact with no friendly formalities, but the process itself was straightforward. I was told I would receive a call when a dock door became available. At 11:37 AM, I received a call instructing me to back into Dock Door 38, open my trailer doors, back into the dock, and chock my wheels. Be aware that the dock doors are on the blind side when approaching. However, if you continue driving all the way down and make a left, there is a lot with dropped trailers where you can safely drive around and come back so the dock doors are on your sight side, which makes backing much easier. At 1:59 PM (13:59), I received a link to pay the lumper fee. After paying, I waited in my truck for a call from the office to notify me that my paperwork was ready. I asked another driver who was closing his trailer doors whether the office calls when paperwork is ready, and he said it took about an hour after paying his lumper fee before he received a call. Based on that, I assumed I was still waiting appropriately. At 2:14 PM (14:14), I finally received a call from the office. The young lady on the phone asked if I was at Dock Door 38, which I confirmed. She then stated that my paperwork had been ready for the last half hour. I asked whether I was supposed to report to the office after paying the lumper fee, and she confirmed that I was. I informed her that there had been a lack of communication, as I was never told that I needed to go to the office after submitting lumper payment. After picking up my paperwork, the exit process was simple: unchock your wheels, pull away from the dock doors, and you’re given a green laminated paper that clears you to leave through the guard shack. There are no red or green dock indicator lights at this facility.
