The Long Island City LIRR station is kind of a mixed bag. On paper, it should be great. The location is honestly one of its biggest strengths — it’s right in the middle of LIC, close to the 7 train, buses, and a lot of good food spots, so getting to and from the station itself is really easy. If you live or work nearby, it feels like it should be super convenient. The problem is the train service. The frequency is pretty awful. Trains only really run during weekday rush hours, and even then it’s limited to peak-direction service. Outside of that, there’s basically nothing. No midday trains, no late-night options, no weekends. Because of that, the station ends up feeling kind of pointless unless your schedule perfectly lines up with the few trains that actually stop there. Most of the time, it’s just easier to take the subway since it’s way more consistent. On top of that, the station layout can be confusing, especially with all the renovations and changes over the years. Between the tracks, platforms, and nearby rail yard, it’s not always clear where you’re supposed to go, and it can feel a little disorganized if you’re not used to it. Even regular riders sometimes seem unsure where the train is actually boarding. Overall, it’s a station with a great location and a lot of potential, but the terrible frequency and confusing layout really hold it back.

This is the last stop on some of the Long Island Railroad trains and the station is used only during rush hours. Also, that this station many years ago was busy because people used this station to go to Manhattan before Penn Station opened up to make it easily.
