We visited this beautiful state park during Labor Day weekend in 2025. It was still hot and sunny in Texas September. Make sure you bring enough water and snacks when hiking. (There is a sign for water suggestion in the trial head too). We did the 2.8 mile light house trail. It was longer than we thought especially during the heated afternoon. It was relaxed in the first half trail since it was most flat. We didn’t rush to “complete” so we can enjoy the wild flowers, the unique cactus and different shapes of rocks along the way. There are two ways to climb up to the “light house” when you reach the picnic area. One of them is surrounded by bushes but not really tricky to find the way out. Fact to know: Palo Duro Canyon is widely considered the second largest canyon on the U.S. ( After Grand Canyon ) - be proud of Texas Grand Canyon and it is well deserved!

A beautiful piece of our great state. I arrived early on a Sunday to try and catch the sunrise (around 7:15am) and the gates were open but the office was not yet so make sure to pay online ($8 per adult). Decided to walk the Lighthouse Trail after all the good things I've heard of it. It's a nice and hilly drive through the canyon to get to the trail parking. It was pretty easy walk at the beginning of the trail and we stopped and took many photos along the way. They have many rest stops and reminders to stay hydrated which also serve as marker points. The trail is also very easy to follow so you know where you need to go. There are no restrooms along the trail so make sure to go before you start! Once you near the "lighthouse", the trail gets a bit harder (if you're inexperienced like me). There were much bigger steps and more hands on climbing needed to get to the top. We definitely had to catch our breath for a moment but once we reached the top it was worth it! So beautiful even on a cloudy and gloomy day. I am hoping to come back and camp later this year and experience more to what this beautiful park has to offer.
