Parked my car in front of my own home in the Preserve community in Chino while attending to my child, and it was towed almost immediately—without any warning or notice of a violation. When I called, I was told it would cost $450 to retrieve it after hours or $320 the next day. It’s disappointing to see this level of over-enforcement in a community we’ve lived in for years and consider home. The towing company works with the HOA to remove vehicles parked right outside residents’ homes and then charges extremely high fees to get them back. The after-hours fee of $450 is especially excessive. This feels less like fair enforcement and more like a system that profits at residents’ expense. The situation comes across as unfair and unreasonable, with steep penalties that seem to primarily benefit the towing company.

Car thieves in disguise. They seem to wait for the moment you step away, then tow your vehicle immediately—no 15-minute grace period, no warning, just opportunistic towing. Imagine having your car towed while it’s parked in front of your own garage, blocking no one, on a dead-end street. They label it a “fire lane,” yet there isn’t even a red curb to indicate that. There was no proof of violation provided and no effort made to give time to move the car. On top of that, they charge excessive fees just to retrieve your own vehicle. It’s hard to see the value they provide to the community. Instead, it feels like they profit off residents through aggressive enforcement. What’s even more concerning is how HOAs seem to enable this, turning neighborhood enforcement into something that feels hostile toward the very people who live there. For those who think this is just complaining without solutions—here’s a reasonable alternative: in residential areas, provide at least one warning before towing, and avoid charging exorbitant fees for minor infractions. And for those who dismiss concerns like this, consider this: it all seems fair—until it happens to you.

Unlawful Tow - Violating California Vehicle Code §22658 My car was towed from directly in front of my driveway at Willow Park Homes (11236 Terra Vista Pkwy, Rancho Cucamonga), where there were no "No Parking" signs, no red curb, and no indication that towing was enforced in that specific area. After the tow, I was told by the towing company's sales manager Eric that this type of short-term parking with hazard lights was actually "allowed," yet my vehicle was taken anyway with zero notice or documentation provided. This tow violated multiple provisions of California Vehicle Code §22658, which applies even on private property and HOA-controlled communities: §22658(a) prohibits towing unless the vehicle is in clear violation (e.g., blocking fire lane, unauthorized space). §22658(e) requires the tow operator to maintain a written record of the tow, including time, location, reason, and who authorized it. §22658(l) requires the tow company to provide that documentation upon request to the vehicle's owner. A single sign at the entrance of a private community does not satisfy the requirement for clearly posted warning signs in areas where towing is enforced. None of these requirements were met in my case. There is no signage near the area I parked. The tow company refused to provide documentation. The HOA's justification referenced a "fire marshal letter" -- but fire safety guidance does not override California state law or excuse failure to follow legal towing procedure. If your car was towed under similar conditions, look up CVC §22658. You may be able to recover towing and storage costs if your rights were violated like mine.
