I brought my car to Express Collision Center after being involved in a hit-and-run that damaged my door and fender. I did not bring the vehicle in for any headlight, electrical, or lighting modification work. During the repair process, I was told that I had brought the car in with a faulty headlight. Prior to the accident, I regularly drove this car at night for school and both headlights were working. I was then told that one of the ballast were bad and that my existing wiring was considered a “fire hazard.” It’s worth noting that I had previously brought this same car to the shop with the same wiring setup, and no concerns about it being a fire hazard were mentioned at that time. When I first went to pick the car up, I had to leave town. I was told that he would try to fix the headlight issue and that I could get the car back the next day. Before any LED installation was discussed, I asked whether there would be a paper trail or written documentation for any headlight-related work, and I was told ahead of time that there would not be. Later, I received a call explaining that LED headlights would be installed and that the HIDs would be replaced. I agreed to proceed and paid $100 for parts with the understanding that the headlights would be replaced and that everything would be fully working when I picked the car up. In hindsight, I should have paused after being told there would be no documentation, but I chose to move forward. When I picked the car up, I initially only checked that the headlights themselves were turning on. A few hours later, I realized that the daytime running lights (DRLs) were not working. When I called to ask about this, I was told that the DRLs did not come on because the headlights were aftermarket. The headlights installed are VLAND headlights, which are designed to be plug-and-play. During further troubleshooting, I discovered that an additional ballast had been installed for the LED headlights, even though these headlights do not require one. This added unnecessary complexity to the electrical setup and made troubleshooting more difficult. After replacing the fuse, I found that the DRLs and taillights would come on only when the driver-side headlight was unplugged. That same driver-side headlight was also loose and would flicker on and off when the wiring was moved. With both headlights connected, the fuse continued to blow and the taillights would not stay on, which made the car unsafe to drive at night. While troubleshooting, I also found three wires taped together that were exposed and touching each other. After additional troubleshooting on my own, I determined that the primary issue was a short inside the headlight assembly itself, which required replacement. In addition, the side markers on the car had been changed. Prior to this visit, the side markers were simply blacked out. Afterward, they had been replaced and tapped into the turn signal wiring. One of the side markers was epoxied in place. I did not request or authorize replacement of the side markers. The side with the epoxied marker was also wired in a way that caused it to blink consistently whenever the DRLs were turned on. Regarding the body work, when I first arrived to pick up the vehicle, a portion of the door damage from the hit-and-run had not yet been repaired. After I pointed this out, the issue was addressed before the car was released to me. I was also given my old HID components back, but one of the HID wires had been returned to me cut from the ballast. Overall, this experience was frustrating due to communication issues and multiple electrical problems that were not resolved as expected. I’m sharing this as an honest account of my experience so others can make an informed decision.
